When Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes first debuted in 1985, it was instantly evident that the strip was special. The characters were charming, the humor was laugh-out-loud, and the strips always had a fascinating message. Calvin's story was always meant to be deeper than it appeared on the surface. Unfortunately, the public never recognized many of the strip's messages. Some of the simpler themes were overlooked, and others were misunderstood.
